The Secret Identity of a Prince

By Katherine Hammond

My name is Todd Diffy. I am the Prince of the North Pole.

Living in the North Pole is class, I love the snow and let’s face it the North Pole is covered in it, but I’m not allowed to play in the snow, it’s not what a Prince does in my father’s eyes.

My father King Oliver Diffy is very strict. In his eyes a Prince should be a handsome and a calm person. This means that running around in the snow is out of the question.

My Sister, on the other hand, loves her role as a Princess, she loves the dresses and the make-up and the whole princess role. She makes everyone bow at her when she enters a room and she makes them call her Princess Miley. Princess of the North Pole – whatever she wants, she gets. Me, I hate it. Sometimes I wish I was normal.

That’s when I realised that the only way that I could play in the snow, like a normal child, was to become a normal child. This is exactly what I did. I secretly bought some clothes to dress down in to make myself look like a normal kid.

I bought a wig to make sure that no one recognised me as I wanted to keep my second life a secret. I knew that my Father would not approve of anything that stood in the way of me learning things relevant to the North Pole. I guess he sees it as the Town in charge of Christmas.

After everything I needed was ready and prepared, I put them on and snuck out of the Palace. No sooner had I left the Palace then I came across an Elf.

As we lived just up the road from Santa’s grotto, he invited me to see Santa. “Of course” I said. My Father had never taken me and my Sister to see Santa. He would tell us Santa was, like him, too busy, and that it would be an irrelevant use of time, spent queuing in a busy town to see him.

After seeing Santa, I met with a group of children who invited me to their house for a while. I went with them and we had a laugh, we played in the garden and built snowmen.

We later went inside to warm up by having a nice hot cup of hot chocolate and a home made mince pie, that was made by one of the kid’s mothers.

This went on for a many months. I would sneak away whenever I had the chance. It was fun, I made many friends. It was great. I had a secret identity which for once allowed me to have fun.

However, it was soon to go wrong. One of the guys invited me to a party and a sleep over. I knew my parents would never allow me to stay at someone’s house, or go to a party, but I still said “Yes”. I thought that I would get away with it. I got away with it so far I could get away with it again.

I came up with a plan. I pretended to be ill that day and stayed in my room to make it look good. I then snuck out of the window and went to the party, leaving the window unlocked so I could sneak back the next morning.

I had the best time. At the party, I ate food that was not on offer at the Palace. Foods like cheese and pineapple sticks, cheese puffs and other party foods. I even enjoyed the loud music. That’s something my father never allowed – loud music.

I even got talking to a girl, we spent most of the night talking and dancing, She even gave me her phone number. I liked her and she liked me.

Then all of a sudden it went wrong, my wig fell off. The party came to a halt, nobody could believe their eyes.

The guy they had spent months with and became friends with was actually 17 year old Prince Todd Diffy.

At that point I knew I was in trouble. One of the parents called me into the kitchen and told me that my parents had reported me missing. I knew I had to go home.

I had a police escort home that night. I got a good old telling off by my Dad, but my Mum understood why I had made myself a secret identity and gone out by myself. That did not stop me from being grounded for two weeks. Confined to the Palace.

My Mum convinced my Dad to let me see my friends still and I finally felt like a normal kid. A normal kid who would one day be King of the North Pole. What more could a boy ask for?
