It was the summer holidays of 1995. My Husband and I were taking our three year old daughter Amy to the seaside for the very first time. We had packed the cases and loaded them into the car. We picked Amy up from School and set off to Cornwall.
The journey was lovely and smooth. We all played games to pass the time. We played games like counting sheep and eye spy.
However, about half way to Cornwall we had to make a stop as it was very hot and we had drank all of the drink, so we had to buy some. After that we set off again.
All of a sudden there was a loud bang, it sounded like thunder and a few seconds later there was a great flash of light almost like lightning. We thought nothing of it, we just assumed it was a little thunderstorm passing by, so we continued with our journey.
We finally reached Cornwall, but we couldn’t find the hotel we were staying at. We must have been driving for an hour before we came across an old looking building. We decided to stay there for the night as it was beginning to get dark and Amy was getting really tired.
We parked the car and we went inside the building. The building was lit by candles, they were everywhere, behind the desk and on the walls.
Behind a desk in the corner of the building stood a small skinny woman. She had long brown hair and was wearing a long black dress. Over the dress she wore a white frilly apron. We were soon shown up a long corridor and shown to our room to spend the night.
At around 10 o’ clock we were woken by a loud bang. The room suddenly filled with a deafening whistling, the door suddenly swung open, but no one was on the other side. At this point we couldn’t bare to stay there any longer as Amy was screaming and crying. Myself and Adam were very spooked and couldn’t wait to get out.
We got into the car and drove for an hour and a half, when all of a sudden there was another loud bang and a bright white flash of light which was identical to the one we had encountered earlier that day. We drove for another half an hour, before finally stopping in an old horse track to spend the night. We put on some of Amy’s CD’s to keep her relaxed until she fell asleep.
The morning finally came and the mood was more relaxed, so we tried to find the hotel again. Despite the previous night we wanted a good holiday.
We drove aimlessly for hours, but we couldn’t find the hotel. We decided to return to the building where we had spent part of the previous night.
When we arrived we were shocked and surprised and very confused. All there was , was a big field, at the edge of the field was a sign which read “ THIS IS THE SITE OF AN OLD VICTORIAN HOTEL WHICH WAS SADLY DESTROYED IN A FIRE IN 1975”.
We got back into the car and set off in search of our hotel. We finally found it and set to enjoy the rest of our holiday.
To this day we don’t know what happened on that day and I don’t think we ever will find out either.
None of the rest matters. Amy enjoyed her holiday and we are planning to take her again next year.
