Katherine Hammond - An Author in Northamptonshire

Katherine Hammond

Children's Author, Genealogist and Mother of doggy Toby

"It is not until much later, as the skin sags and the heart weakens, that children understand; their stories, and all their accomplishments, sit atop the stories of their mothers and fathers, stones upon stones, beneath the waters of their lives."

In Focus:

An interview with Katherine Hammond.

From the sad loss of Katherine's portfolio in a house fire some years ago, to her inspirations, including her beloved pets and what you can look forward to on this website, find it all in this interview with Katherine Hammond...

Katherine, nice to meet you! Jumping straight in, what has inspired you to make a go of it as an Author?

Nice to meet you too! I’ve always enjoyed reading since a child and the way that it really inspires the imagination.

As i’ve got older, whilst also being a full time Carer for my Mother, I felt that I should really put together a website to showcase my work and also to invite feedback as I am quite aware I am going to need a fair bit of it, in order to grow!

It took me a while to learn how to design and develop my own website but i’d like to think it is getting there.

I used to have copies of everything that I wrote but sadly these were all destroyed in a house fire. Luckily, my Grandparents had kept copies of all of my work!

Your website is looking fabulous! Sorry to hear about the fire, was everyone OK?

Well thank you. You helped with a fair bit of it! Thankfully nobody was hurt in the fire. We lost a lot of our possessions though!

I guess that was the sad part really. In terms of a major positive that come out of it, it’s taught me to be more resilliant and to adapt in the way that I work.

It’s also helped me to grow as a person and wake up to the struggles of others. Reading can be a great escape from the oppression of everyday and has been, for me, at times in my life.

I understand that your beautiful little Shorkie terrier Toby has been the inspiration for one of your series of short stories. How big a part of your life are animals?

Animals mean the world to me. There have been times in my life when I have not really been in the space to spend that much time with humans.

I also struggle with anxiety which has, at times, made things quite difficult but Toby always gets me out the door and that, in turn, provides inspiration, as does my 12 year old Niece who is full of beans – perhaps they came from Jack in the Beanstalk.

Toby has got me through so much and he even has his own TikTok page that i’ve created for him. Here, at Northampton HQ, AKA my apartment, there’s also my conure bird Charlie who makes me laugh all day and reminds me of Enid Blyton’s Kiki in the “Adventure Series” and also Gizmo who is technically my Niece’s hamster.

So far, i’ve written some short stories for my Toby’s Terrible Tales series, maybe Charlie and Gizmo will crop up soon. You’ll have to wait and see!

We will look forward to finding out more! What would you say is your favourite book and why?

John Steinback’s “Of Mice and Men”. I grew up, and was inspired by Enid Blyton. As an adult, I’ve also really enjoyed JK Rowling’s Harry Potter Books. Both Blyton and Rowling have inspired me in becoming a children’s writer.

Great Choices! So, what do you like to write about and who is your target audience?

I enjoy writing children’s fiction and fantasy. My target market is children aged 5 – 16. In my spare time, I enjoy writing for my genealogy blog as I am also a keen Genealogist and about any other topic that grabs my fascination after some research.

You’ll find all of the other good stuff on my website blog.

Oooh, any relation to Blyton or Rowling then?

[laughs], I’ve not found one yet but i’ll be sure to let you know if I do!

What do you plan to do next to move forward in your Career?

As a full time Carer to my Mother, I certainly don’t have the largest pot of money but family comes first. I’d always welcome opportunities and invites on to Courses and to make new contacts and networking.

I’m lucky to also have a supportive family including two brothers and seven Aunts and Uncles. I also welcome feedback. If any opportunities arise, or if anybody wants to provide constructive criticism, please do complete my website contact form below.

Thanks so much Katherine!

Thanks, it’s been a pleasure!

Katherine still hasn’t proven she is related to Kings and Queens

Katherine has been researching her family history since 2020 in the hope of proving that gossip in her wider family of the Hammonds descending from royalty is not pie in the sky. Katherine grew up listening to fairy tales and stories of Princes and Princesses and was delighted with the prospect.

Why DNA testing is essential in tracing your family history

The use of Autosomal DNA tests, from genealogy companies Ancestry and 23andme are absolutely essential to avoid burying yourself further and further in incorrect information when using family tree building and research tools.
